 Etro Women's Collection Fall Winter 2011 2012
For the Fall Winter 2011 2012 Women's collection, Veronica Etro has tapped the technical excellence and originality of textile relics.
The starting point is antique carpets, tapestries and embroideries, all of which have been reconceived as new creations for today. Playing off the worn-in color palette of burnt and rust tones, surfaces have an aged-in quality, as if touched by time. The nostalgia of antiques is swiftly urbanized by a youthful fusion of opposites. Technical items play off the handmade, high gloss contrasts and heavy masculine fabrics are counterbalanced by the femininity of ultra light transparency. As always, a mixing of styles and times results in a fresh proposition for modern dressing.
This season's prints are characterized by a watery and faded quality, as if slightly aged by time. Long fibers of fur or wool are recreated in trompe l'oeil prints. Reversed carpet prints reveal the seaming and subtle inter-workings of their weaves.
An antique table tile print reveals old-world workmanship, while strips of printed paisley have been worked into a striped haberdashery pattern. Compact carpet motifs, each a singular design, dissolve effortlessly into silver metallic backgrounds.
The combination of diverse materials and weights is essential to the season's look. A single patched coat, for example, features metalized leather arms, a mannish tartan body, a decorative jacquard trim and curly lambswool collar.
Shiny printed iridescent Lurex is paired with hairy tweeds or tartans; silk is paired with silver metal work, heavy wool contrasts with shimmering nylon. Unusual treatments have allowed for the unique transformation of materials.
A nylon Lurex, in both transparent and dense versions, appears to have a liquid surface. Fluffy long wool has been treated to look like fur, while tufts on a 3-D striped sweater look like a pelt but is in fact a knit.
The concept of enveloping layers that wrap around the body informs many of the season's newest silhouettes. Wrap dresses twist around the neck and torso with multiple layers that add new dimension to the prints.
A pencil skirt is built from strips of sliced fabric. Oversized plaid scarves, draped over the shoulder, cross the body diagonally.
Ultra wide pleat front pants, some with split panel skirts, add a masculine sensibility, as do printed dresses with tuxedo jacket-silhouettes.
New additions include cropped wide pants, mohair socks, bomber jackets and a black wool double-jacket.
The looks are toughened with graphic silver accessories such as sharp edged earrings and amulet style chain and sword necklaces. This raw aesthetics continues with large silver buckles on chain or leather belts, hard-frame square handbags, and on high heeled, urban shoe boots with lambswool lining. Handbags are clean and square in shape, including one with new oxidized paisley printed leather.
