| Mercedes-Benz MLK premium compact SUV |
Mercedes has recently transformed itself into a real trendsetter by launching into the battle for the first time a large crossover and a full-size four-door coupe. But, for the near future, the trend setter gets to follow the trend imposed by its most important rival, and develop an equivalent model for the BMW X3, premium compact SUV. The latest vehicle to wear the Mercedes star will be called MLK-Class.
Mercedes will unveil its new compact SUV at the Geneva Motor Show next March. The Mercedes MLK will feature a large grille, smart squared-off headlamps, rectangular exhaust tips, a small roof spoiler and a large vertical tailgate, which opens down to the rear bumper. The MLK is using technical components from the yet to come new Mercedes C-Class, which is set to debut in 2007, and it has four wheel drive. Like the MLK, the next-generation midsize M-Class will be on a unibody platform. Inspired by the BMW X3, the MLK will most likely be oriented towards the sport rather than the utility end of the SUV market. The MLK is expected to feature the more potent engine of the C-Class, including the new four-valve 3.0-liter and 3.5-liter V-6s as well as a supercharged four cylinder and a CDI turbo diesel. As any other model in the range, the MLK is likely to feature an AMG version, featuring the V8 engine known from the C55AMG. Once on the market, the newcomer is set to strike against rivals like BMW X3 and Audi Q5. The MLK will be assembled in Bremen at a yearly production rate of 40.000 units. |
